Hodgson: Cole could face Chelsea

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson believes Joe Cole has an outside chance of facing his former club Chelsea this weekend.

Cole appeared to have been ruled out for a fortnight following scans on the hamstring injury that forced him off during the second half of Sunday's win at Bolton.

But Hodgson insists the 28-year-old's injury is not serious and has not discounted him for the Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash with the champions at Anfield.

Hodgson told the club's website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "With Cole it's not as bad as feared. It shouldn't keep him out for that long.

"I would say it's a week to 10-day injury. The scan was positive in that it's a very minor tear he has, but you can't really put a definite date on how long that tear is going to take to repair. But the physical people are very optimistic.

Nani, Fletcher out of Wolves clash

Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled Nani and Darren Fletcher out of Saturday's Premier League encounter with Wolves.

The pair both picked up injuries during Tuesday evening's 3-0 win over Bursaspor in Turkey.

And whilst it is hoped the damage is not too serious, it is enough to keep two of Ferguson's most important players out of a key domestic encounter.

"Unfortunately, Nani has a groin injury and is out for Saturday," confirmed Ferguson.

"I think Darren will be out as well, so that part has been disappointing.

Figo: Gareth Bale is just amazing

Inter Milan legend Luis Figo has heaped praise on Gareth Bale after his performance helped Tottenham to a 3-1 win over his side.

Bale set up easy goals for both Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko as Tottenham secured the victory at White Hart Lane.

The third Spurs' goal created by Welshman prompted Inter director Figo to approach Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp.

Redknapp revealed: "He said to me, 'Bale is just amazing, amazing'.

"When Figo says that, it's got to be good, because he was such a fantastic footballer.

Group C: Valencia 3-0 Rangers

Rangers suffered their first defeat in the Champions League this season as Roberto Soldado handed Valencia victory.

He netted on both sides of the interval, before Tino Costa sealed the win late on, as the Spaniards leapfrogged Rangers into second place in Group C, with Manchester United strengthening their grasp on top spot with a win over Bursaspor.

Steven Naismith hit the woodwork twice on a frustrating night for Walter Smith's men as they failed to produce the fightback to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition.

Rangers were boosted by the news that Maurice Edu - who netted for both teams as the last meeting between these clubs ended in a 1-1 draw a couple of weeks ago - was passed fit for the match.

The American was doubtful for the clash with a calf injury but was able to start, while fellow injury doubt Vladimir Weiss failed to make the squad.

Group D: Copenhagen 1-1 Barcelona

Barcelona will have to wait to book their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League after being held by FC Copenhagen.

Barca knew a victory in Denmark would guarantee themselves a place in the knock-out stages and the two-time reigning Spanish champions looked on course to achieve that after taking a 31st-minute lead through Lionel Messi.

However, second-placed FC Copenhagen went down the other end and drew level almost immediately through Claudemir to earn a share of the points - although they survived a big let-off in the final minute when Barca substitute Pedro Rodriguez hit the post.

The result leaves Barca still top of Group D on eight points, one above FC Copenhagen and five clear of third-placed Rubin Kazan with two games remaining.

Group A: Tottenham 3-1 Inter Milan

Tottenham completed their renaissance as a European force by producing a stunning display to beat holders Inter Milan.

On a glory, glory night arguably not witnessed at White Hart Lane since Spurs last rubbed shoulders with the game's elite almost half a century earlier, Harry Redknapp's side were simply irresistible.

Their win was enough to take them above Inter on goal difference at the top of Group A and put them on the verge of qualifying for the knockout phase.

In what was a typically-breathless game, Tottenham were magnificent to a man, but Gareth Bale once again stole the show with another jaw-dropping performance less than a fortnight on from his stunning San Siro hat-trick.

So badly did he humiliate the so-called best right-back in the world tonight that, long before the end, the home fans were singing: "Taxi for Maicon!"

Group C: Bursaspor 0-3 Man United

Manchester United shrugged off the loss of star man Nani to claim a very impressive Champions League win over Bursaspor.

Second-half goals from Darren Fletcher, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe extended United's unbeaten record in all competitions to 23 matches and ensured they only require a draw against Rangers at Ibrox on November 24 to claim their customary place in the knockout phase with a game to spare.

And, as Nani is already rated doubtful to face Wolves on Saturday after limping off with a groin injury midway through the opening period, Sir Alex Ferguson must have been delighted that two of his back-up wide-men followed up Fletcher's opener - only his second Champions League goal in his 50th appearance in the competition - to seal a comfortable win.

Already without 10 players on this trip, including the rested Rio Ferdinand, who was engaged in an entertaining Twitter spat with Robbie Savage, United could ill afford to lose anyone else.

Fergie hails new hero Chicharito

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Javier Hernandez after his late winner fired Manchester United into the last eight of the Carling Cup.

The 22-year-old, signed for £7million before the World Cup, came off the bench to score in the last minute of this topsy-turvy tie against Wolves and secure a 3-2 win.

Hernandez scored both goals for United against Stoke on Sunday and is fast becoming a new hero to a club traumatised by the Wayne Rooney saga.

Ferguson said: "He was absolutely brilliant - it was a magnificent goal. He's shaped to shoot, dummied the defender and finished really well.

"They tend to build heroes quickly here but he's justifying the praise at the moment.

Man United 3-2 Wolves

Javier Hernandez was again the hero for Manchester United as his late goal fired his side into the last eight of the Carling Cup.

Hernandez came off the bench to secure victory over Wolves in the last minute of normal time and keep alive United's quest to become the first side to win the trophy three times in a row.

Bebe, the relatively-unknown striker signed in the summer for £7.4million from Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes, crowned a promising first start with a fortunate opening goal before George Elokobi equalised.

Park Ji-Sung made it 2-1 to the home side but Kevin Foley hauled Wolves level again before Hernandez's excellent finish.

Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy seven, and the first half in a quiet Old Trafford, with plenty of empty seats, was a dismal affair.

United's striker Gabriel Obertan and Federico Macheda were poor, the best chance coming when Macheda sent a shot straight at Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey after Bebe's scuffed centre ended up at his feet.

Series finale abandoned due to wet outfield

India won the three-ODI series 1-0 as the final match was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Margao. Heavy rain on the eve of the game clogged the ground and, though the weather was clear on match day, the outfield was not suitable for play.

The result meant a winless tour for Australia. The last time they experienced something similar in India was on their tour in 2008-09 where they drew the tour game and lost the Tests 0-2.

The first ODI in Kochi was also washed out in similar circumstances. It was an unfortunate result for the locals who had turned up at the stadium. The series was effectively reduced to a solitary game in Visakhapatnam and both teams took a couple of positives.

For India, Virat Kohli scored a century to move ahead of Rohit Sharma in the selection pecking order and R Ashwin impressed with the ball. India, though, struggled in the end overs with Australia looting 84 from the final five overs. For Australia, Michael Clarke made a century after a disappointing performance in the Test series, in which he managed just 35 runs in four innings. Mitchell Starc, the 20-year old left-arm seamer, made a promising debut and the other debutant John Hastings too had a decent outing.

Federer matches Sampras haul of 64 ATP titles

Swiss master Roger Federer beat Germany's Florian Mayer 6-4 6-3 to win the Stockholm Open Sunday and equal Pete Sampras's haul of 64 ATP titles.

"It's fantastic to come here, face the pressure and be able to come through at the end," the world number two told Swedish TV.

Federer now shares fourth place in terms of most ATP tournaments won, behind Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe.

But while the Swiss holds numerous records, including most Grand Slam men's singles titles, he is unlikely to catch up with Connors any time soon. The American finished his career with over 100 titles.

Federer was happy to have reached the 64 figure, telling a news conference: "You never know when it's your last tournament, that's why you want to savor every victory."

Eminem, Nicki Minaj top MTV rappers list

Before even dropping her debut album, American rapper Nicki Minaj was the first female to be named on MTV's "hottest MC's list" of the past year, announced on Sunday.

The 25-year-old New York-based rapper, whose real name is Onika Tonya Maraj and who has been rising in stature in the hip hop world this year, came in at number six on the annual list which is in its fourth year.

Minaj, whose debut album "Pink Friday" is due to be released in November, was the first female rapper to ever make the list that was picked based on lyrical ability, flow, commercial success and cultural impact, MTV said.

After a dearth of U.S. female rappers in recent years, Minaj -- a protégé of Lil Wayne -- has gained buzz in the lead-up to her debut album and has evoked previous rappers such as Lil' Kim while carving out a powerful image of her own.

Liverpool 2 Blackburn Rovers 1

Striker Fernando Torres ended his six-match goal drought with the winner against Blackburn Rovers to provide a much-needed boost at Anfield.

Goalkeeper Paul Robinson had kept the Reds at bay until Sotirios Kyrgiakos' 48th-minute header and although a Jamie Carragher own goal quickly levelled things up Torres struck only his second of the season soon after.

It ended a run of seven matches without a victory in all competitions and although it was still not enough to lift Liverpool out of the bottom three the result came as a welcome relief.

Torres, starved of service, has looked out of form with his only goal coming in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at the end of August.

However, if the Spain international could have chosen any team to play against it would have been Rovers, against whom he has now scored five times in their last four meetings.

And it can be no coincidence Liverpool's only two Barclays Premier League victories have been as a result of Torres applying the decisive finish.

It was the very least representatives of New England Sports Ventures, in the crowd after their £300m buy-out just over a week ago, will have wanted to see.

It may have been for their benefit that there was a guest appearance by Gerry Marsden to sing a live rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone.

The change in the pre-match routine appeared to have the desired effect on Liverpool but, although it was as positive a first half as they had put in under manager Roy Hodgson, it still failed to produce a goal.

Man Utd Gained their First away win

Javier Hernandez filled the vacancy left by Wayne Rooney in style as Manchester United snatched their first away win of the Premier League season at Stoke City.

As Rooney celebrated his 25th birthday nursing an ankle injury in Dubai after pulling back from the brink and signing a new five-year deal at United, Hernandez struck twice to ensure a week of turbulence concluded with a crucial three points.

Hernandez gave United a first-half lead with an athletic header, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side looked in danger of failing to protect a lead once again when Stoke substitute Tuncay struck a stunning equaliser with nine minutes left.

But it was Hernandez, the little Mexican with the poacher's instinct, who ensured the Stoke celebrations were brief when he turned home the winner from close range after 86 minutes.

Rooney may have been the talk of the pre-match build-up, but his name was barely heard among the hordes of United fans who were initially so infuriated by his desire to leave Old Trafford.

Arsenal punish 10 men of Man City

Arsenal profited from the early dismissal of Dedryck Boyata to secure an impressive victory over title rivals Manchester City at Eastlands.

Boyata fouled Marouane Chamakh when he was the last defender five minutes in.

Arsenal then went ahead as Samir Nasri exchanged passes with Andrey Arshavin and fired home, before Cesc Fabregas had a penalty saved by Joe Hart.

In the second half Alex Song curled home to double the lead and substitute Nicklas Bendtner slotted in a third.

The result sees Arsene Wenger's men leapfrog West Brom, Tottenham, City and Manchester United into second, five points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Arsenal were undoubtedly helped by Boyata's fifth-minute dismissal but the manner in which they went on to dispatch a side who spent £100m on new signings last summer was to be admired.
