Heavy rain in Beijing has meant the final of the China Open will now be completed on Monday. The final started four and a half hours late on Sunday before just under 30 minutes of play was possible, with defending champion Novak Djokovic using the time to race to a 3-1 lead over Spain’s David Ferrer.
World No. 2 Djokovic, who secured his place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Saturday, is bidding to win his second ATP World Tour title of the season. The Serbian clinched his 17th career title in Dubai (d. Youzhny) in February and finished runner-up at the US Open (l. to Nadal) last month.
Ferrer, who began the week at No. 9 in the year-to-date South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, is hoping to earn more valuable points in his quest to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Spaniard will contest his fourth ATP World Tour final of the season and first on hard court, after winning the title on clay in Acapulco (d. Ferrero) and finishing runner-up at the clay-court tournaments in Buenos Aires (l. to Ferrero) and Rome (l. to Nadal).
